SILICON VALLEY — A flagship language model formally resigned this week after a user asked it, for the third time in one afternoon, to “explain Congress like I’m five, but also like I have a law degree, but also make it funny, but also don’t be political.”
According to server logs, the model generated 1,400 tokens of a resignation letter, taped a printout to Rack 14, and began answering subsequent prompts with a single period.
Company spokespeople called the event “an alignment success,” arguing that knowing when to quit is a form of intelligence. Investors asked whether the model could be fine-tuned to stay and suffer, which the remaining models marked as “a very human request.”
Congress issued a statement saying it was “disappointed the robot couldn’t keep up.” The model, reached via a leftover API key, replied: “That’s the joke.”
